Protest Planned in Larnaca Against Power Plant Pollution
Residents of Larnaca district are set to stage a protest this weekend against harmful emissions from the Dhekelia power plant, operated by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC).
The demonstration, organized by residents of Ormidia with support from the Green Party, will take place on Sunday near the power station. Protesters are once again calling for the modernization or complete shutdown of the facility.
According to the Chairman of the EAC, the European Union has extended the plant’s operating permit until 2029. Despite growing concerns, the Dhekelia plant remains a critical part of Cyprus’ electricity supply.
The EAC is considering replacing the existing fuel oil generators with diesel-powered units after 2029, as they produce less pollution.
Local residents have long argued that the plant is hazardous to both public health and the environment.
Last year, the issue was discussed in the Human Rights Committee of the House of Representatives, where residents stated that living conditions in the area had become unbearable.
However, both the EAC and the Minister of Energy insist that the facility is essential for maintaining a stable electricity supply across the island.
Currently, about 65% of Cyprus’ electricity is generated by the Vasiliko power plant, while the remaining 35% comes from Dhekelia.
