In Larnaca, 58-Year-Old Bus Driver Detained for Drunk Driving and Overloading Passengers
In Larnaca, on the morning of September 16, a 58-year-old bus driver was detained on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and carrying more passengers than permitted, the Police reported.
According to the Police, members of the Technical Road Police Control Unit of the headquarters stopped the bus around 06:45 on the Avdellero — Athienou road near the Avdellero exit. During the inspection, it was found that there were 54 people on board with an authorized capacity of 50, including high school students traveling to educational institutions.
The driver underwent a final breathalyzer test, which showed 63 μg% against the permissible limit of 9 μg%. The man was detained for drunk driving and carrying an excessive number of passengers as cases subject to immediate judicial proceedings.
The 58-year-old driver was presented to the Larnaca District Court, and a criminal case has been filed against him. The court scheduled a hearing for October 17 and set conditions for appearance; the accused did not admit to the charges and must post bail to appear in court. The Police will send a notice to the Department of Road Transport for suspension of the driver’s professional license.
A representative of the bus company stated that the driver has been suspended from performing routes pending clarification of the circumstances. The investigation continues at the Athienou police station. Source: Cyprus News Agency.
