Attempted bombing near a bar thwarted in Limassol: 44-year-old man detained

In the Zakaki area of Limassol, police detained a 44-year-old man suspected of preparing an explosion near one of the bars.
A report was received by police at around 04:25 a.m. on Monday. The owner of the establishment said he noticed an unknown man near a scooter opposite the building: the man was carrying a container with flammable liquid and an object resembling an explosive device. The entrepreneur, together with several witnesses, tried to restrain the suspect, but he managed to flee.
Law enforcement officers promptly cordoned off the area and launched a search operation. About 40 minutes later, the man was found nearby — hiding in dense vegetation. He was detained without resistance.
At the scene, police found a canister with flammable liquid, as well as a homemade cylindrical metal explosive device containing explosive material and an improvised detonator.
During the arrest, the man sustained injuries and was taken to a Limassol hospital. Checks revealed that he had been staying in Cyprus illegally — without valid documents since the end of June 2025. The investigation is ongoing.
