A new measles transmission chain has been recorded in Limassol — four children and one adult are among those infected
A new chain of measles spread has been identified in Limassol, involving four children and one adult. According to the Ministry of Health, it is believed by doctors that the adult patient was the source of infection for one of the children.
The first alarming sign was the admission of a child to the hospital for an unrelated medical reason. During the hospital stay, the child developed characteristic symptoms of measles — high fever and the typical skin rash. The medical staff immediately conducted the necessary laboratory tests, which confirmed the diagnosis.
After that, doctors promptly activated epidemiological surveillance protocols. All of the child’s contacts were identified and examined. The investigation revealed that the chain of infection originated from an adult who had previously been in contact with an infected person.
At present, one child has already been discharged from the hospital and is in stable condition. The other three remain under medical supervision: one is in the pediatric ward of Limassol Hospital, and two are in Makarios Children’s Hospital in Nicosia. Doctors note that all patients are receiving the necessary treatment and are in stable condition, although they continue to be closely monitored.
Epidemiologists are carrying out large-scale efforts to identify all possible contacts of the infected individuals to prevent further spread of the disease. Authorities are urging parents to check whether their children are vaccinated against measles and, if necessary, to get vaccinated without delay.
Measles remains one of the most contagious viral infections. It is transmitted through airborne droplets, and the virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves the room. Symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash that usually starts on the face and gradually spreads across the body.
Doctors remind that the measles vaccine is the most reliable protection for both children and adults without immunity. This is especially important when new cases of the disease are being recorded in various regions.
