Man Wanted in Limassol for Defrauding Currency Exchange of $40,000
Limassol police are searching for a man, believed to be around 60 years old, suspected of stealing $40,000 from a currency exchange office. The scam was based on gaining the trust of the staff.
According to the police, the incident occurred in Germasogeia. The crime was reported by a 54-year-old employee of the exchange office.
The victim explained that the suspect, who had visited the office several times in the past to exchange small amounts of money, called ahead to request an exchange of euros for $40,000.
When the suspect arrived, the employee handed him $40,000 in $100 bills. After counting the money, the suspect placed the bills into envelopes, which he then put into a small bag and left on the counter.
The man then informed the employee that he was going to fetch €36,800 for the exchange but never returned.
Growing suspicious, the employee checked the bag left behind on the counter and discovered only two envelopes containing a total of $409 in $1 and $5 bills. It appears the suspect had swapped the envelopes during the transaction.
Police responded to the scene, confiscated the bag as evidence, and issued a warrant for the suspect’s arrest. The suspect is described as approximately 60 years old.
