The first city program for sterilizing stray cats has started in Limassol
The Municipality of Limassol has launched the city’s first large-scale program for sterilizing stray cats. The initiative, announced back in November, aims to reduce the number of street animals and improve their living conditions.
€40,000 has been allocated for the project. Under the program, approximately 690 cats are planned to be sterilized, primarily in the historic center of Limassol and in areas with the highest density of stray animals.
The Mayor of the city, Yiannis Armeftis, noted that the program is being implemented with the participation of animal welfare organizations and volunteers and is part of a long-term strategy for animal protection. According to him, respect for animals is an indicator of the city’s maturity and responsibility.
The project was initiated by the Municipal Committee for Animal Protection, established in 2024. The operations are carried out by four licensed veterinarians in coordination with the Veterinary Service of Cyprus.
The program operates on a voucher system: registered volunteers receive special coupons from the municipal health service, deliver the cats to clinics, and after sterilization return the animals to their usual habitats.
