The Cyprus Drug Law Enforcement Unit (YKAN), in cooperation with the Customs Department, uncovered an attempt to smuggle illegal substances into the country. At the center of the investigation is a 31-year-old Limassol resident suspected of sending cannabis disguised as a regular food package.

The incident occurred during a routine inspection at the international parcel reception center in Limassol. While checking packages arriving from abroad, officials noticed a suspicious box containing four packs of cornflakes. Inside each pack, instead of cereal, there was a plastic-wrapped parcel with a dried plant substance resembling cannabis.

The total weight of the seized substance was 1 kilogram and 83 grams. A preliminary analysis confirmed it to be a plant-based narcotic.

Based on the information gathered, police identified the intended recipient — a 31-year-old man residing in Limassol. He was arrested as part of the ongoing investigation. The court is expected to review a police request to detain him during the investigation.

Authorities are now trying to determine whether the suspect acted alone or was part of a wider criminal network involved in drug trafficking to the island. Special attention is being paid to the method of concealment, the delivery route, and potential accomplices both in Cyprus and abroad.

The police emphasize that the fight against drug trafficking remains a top priority and that such attempts, no matter how creative, will be intercepted by all available means.
