Nicosia is discussing the creation of a unified shelter for stray dogs that will serve several communities in the region.
The initiative was examined at a meeting attended by Commissioner for Environment and Animal Protection Antonia Theodosiou, head of the Nicosia Local Authorities Organization Konstantinos Yorkadzis, representatives of the district administration and the animal welfare organization Simba Animal Aid.
They discussed the difficulties faced by rural communities — lack of staff, equipment, funding and infrastructure for temporary animal care.
Most municipalities do not have their own shelters, and existing centres struggle to care for and house dogs due to high costs and a low adoption rate.
Simba Animal Aid proposed a project to create a shelter that will serve several grouped communities of the Nicosia district — a total of 31 settlements.
The project will be included in the State Support Plan for Local Authorities for 2024–2029.
Antonia Theodosiou emphasized that the issue of stray animals requires coordinated actions, cooperation and constant attention from all stakeholders.
