Traffic Lights with Female Figures Installed in Nicosia to Promote Equality

Unusual traffic lights have appeared on the streets of Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus: instead of the traditional red and green “men,” they now display female figures. According to city officials, the project aims to promote gender equality and highlight the importance of women in society.
The initiative was implemented by the Nicosia Municipality in collaboration with the Department of Public Works and organizations advocating for equal rights. As part of the program, standard pictograms at several central intersections were replaced with images of women in a confident stance — with a raised hand symbolizing progress and active participation in social life.
Municipal representatives emphasized that the goal of the project is not merely visual diversity, but fostering public awareness of equality in everyday urban settings. They noted that the appearance of female figures on traffic lights reflects the city’s commitment to a more inclusive and modern urban culture.
The public reaction has been mixed. Many welcomed the idea, noting that such initiatives make the city more open and progressive. However, some drivers expressed concern that the unfamiliar symbols could distract attention on the road. The municipality stated that it will monitor the results of the experiment and adjust the project if necessary, should the changes affect road safety.
