Residents of Pegeia have become seriously worried about the quality of their tap water. The mayor himself admitted that he doesn’t use it, saying the water is unsuitable even for irrigation.

According to Alpha Cyprus’s correspondent in Paphos, complaints about the water quality in Pegeia have only recently started to emerge. Two wells were disconnected from the supply due to cloudy water, and tests revealed high levels of boron.

Reports say the well water is sent to municipal reservoirs, where it’s mixed with desalinated water. Chemical treatment is then applied to bring the water quality up to acceptable standards before it’s delivered to homes.

When asked if he personally drinks the tap water, the mayor said no, emphasizing that it is not fit for use. The high boron content makes the water toxic enough that it can’t even be used for watering plants.
