Nicosia Authorities Open 21 Feeding Stations for Stray Cats
The Municipality of Nicosia has created 21 organized feeding stations for homeless cats as part of a new animal welfare initiative. The project was introduced at a special event where the new Nicosia Pet Friendly online platform was also presented.
Under the program, 21 feeders have already been installed across all districts of the city, and two organized feeding points have been established — near the Pedieos River and in Olympiados Park. The system operates on the principle of controlled and clean feeding with the participation of volunteers.
The initiative is implemented in cooperation with Kosmos Insurance, which acted as the main sponsor of the project.
Mayor of Nicosia Charalambos Prountzos noted that this initiative reflects the level of culture and responsibility of society. According to him, cats are an integral part of Nicosia's urban environment, and their proper maintenance contributes to both public health protection and maintaining the balance of the urban ecosystem.
During the event, a practical demonstration of using the feeders was conducted by the project initiator, Maria Arkoudi. Children from the Faneromeni kindergarten participated in the presentation to emphasize the importance of fostering a caring attitude toward animals from an early age.
The municipality also highlighted the importance of neutering stray animals as a key tool for controlling their population.
In addition, the new Nicosia Pet Friendly platform was introduced for the first time — a modern resource where information on responsible pet ownership, adoption opportunities, lost and found pets, and pet-friendly places and initiatives in the city will be published.
According to municipal representatives, the project's goal is to create a city that respects and protects animals, while fostering cooperation between residents, local authorities, and the private sector.
