Authorities Investigate Complaints About Chemical Spraying in Paphos

A debate has erupted in Cyprus over the use of chemical herbicides in public areas. Environmental organizations have raised concerns about potential violations during the spraying of sidewalks and roads, warning about risks to human health, bees, and the environment.
The issue concerns a complaint regarding the actions of the Paphos municipality. Activists claim that in several cases chemical agents were used without following all legally required procedures. In response, the municipality stated that herbicides are used only in exceptional cases — for example, in hard-to-reach areas where mechanical cleaning is impossible.
Following appeals from environmental groups, staff from the Department of Agriculture visited the site. The department has launched an investigation, after which it will be decided whether there are grounds for imposing a fine.
The issue of pesticide use remains sensitive: legislation allows their application only under strict conditions and with written approval from an agronomist specialist.
