Possibly the most devastating wildfire in Cyprus's history

Yesterday's wildfire in the mountainous areas of Limassol may be the largest in the history of the Republic of Cyprus. This was stated on Alpha Cyprus by former fire chief Markos Trangolas.

Preliminary estimates indicate that about 100 square kilometers of land have been destroyed by the fire. For comparison: the largest fire before this — in 2000 in the Larnaca mountains — affected almost half that area (52 km²).

Trangolas explained that it was impossible to contain the fire from the beginning — due to strong winds, both air and ground forces were unable to deliver a critical initial strike. Once the flames got out of control, equipment could no longer reach the main hotspots: the smoke screen made extinguishing efforts impossible.

The situation remains critical. Authorities continue to fight the fire, and experts are already calling this disaster unprecedented for Cyprus.
