For the First Time in 60 Years, Cyprus Recorded 0 mm of Rainfall in October

October 2024 has gone down in history as one of the driest months ever recorded in Cyprus. For the first time in 60 years—and the third time in a century—meteorologists have reported 0 mm of rainfall.

“October is leaving us with figures that will be remembered in the annals of drought in Cyprus. We have recorded nearly 0 mm of precipitation. While similar occurrences have happened before, it has been a long time since we last saw zero rainfall in the country,” stated Andreas Chrisantu, a meteorological service operator.

According to meteorological records, zero rainfall in October was previously documented in 1916 and 1964.

“Seasonal models indicate that rainfall in the upcoming period is expected to be below average, approximately 50-75% of normal levels, while temperatures will align with seasonal averages,” the meteorologist forecasted.

Notably, data from the Water Development Department reveals that, due to the lack of precipitation, the inflow of water into the reservoirs this month has been zero.

Currently, the total volume of water in the reservoirs stands at 26%, amounting to 75 million cubic meters, compared to 48% and 140 million cubic meters for the same period last year.
