Explosion in Northern Cyprus Alarms Residents

On the morning of Wednesday, December 4, an explosion in Northern Cyprus startled residents on both sides of the island. The loud blast was reported by residents of the Republic of Cyprus, particularly near the border area.

According to local media, the explosion occurred around 9:00 a.m. close to the construction site of the new presidential palace in Northern Cyprus. Residents in southern Nicosia, especially those near the Ayios Dhometios (Metehan) checkpoint, described hearing a loud bang that shook the surrounding area.

The police in the Republic of Cyprus clarified that the explosion happened in the northern part of the island and posed no danger to the south.

Authorities in Northern Cyprus have yet to comment on the incident. Reports about the cause of the explosion remain contradictory. Some sources claim it took place near a Turkish military post, while others, including CyBC, suggest it was a controlled detonation carried out as part of roadworks.

Additionally, several media outlets speculated that the explosion might have resulted from demining operations along the "Green Line." There are also unconfirmed reports that an ambulance was dispatched to the scene.
