Over 180 migrants were deported from Cyprus in a week
Last week, over 180 migrants were deported from Cyprus. All of them had been residing on the island illegally. According to the police, 181 individuals were returned to their home countries during the past week.
In total, since the beginning of 2024, 3,763 people who were residing illegally in Cyprus have been deported or repatriated to their countries of origin. This is approximately 1,500 more returns than the entire previous year. For comparison, in all of 2023, this figure was 2,348 people.
It is worth noting that Cyprus is in a "state of crisis" due to the increasing number of migrants arriving on the island. The President of the country, Nicos Anastasiades, has already appealed to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to intervene in the situation.
On May 1st, the President of the European Commission will visit Cyprus on the occasion of the country's 20th anniversary of joining the EU. After the visit to the island, Ursula von der Leyen will travel to Lebanon along with Nicos Anastasiades.
It was previously reported that the Cypriot authorities had suspended the process of considering asylum applications from Syrian migrants.
