Suspects Arrested for Smuggling Migrants by Boat from Limassol to Italy
The Cyprus Republic Police have arrested two individuals suspected of human trafficking. They are accused of organizing the smuggling of 20 migrants by boat from Limassol to Italy.
According to a police press release, the two detained men, aged 34 and 33, were sentenced to eight days in custody on Wednesday. They face several charges, including human trafficking.
Earlier reports indicated that on Tuesday, a group of Syrians attempted to sail from a beach in Limassol to Italy.
In total, 20 people—12 men, 5 women, and 3 children—planned to leave the island in this unusual manner. Around midnight, they set off from a beach near the monastery area in Limassol with the aim of reaching Italy.
The journey was interrupted by the marine police at approximately 03:30, about seven nautical miles east of Akrotiri. The detained individuals told the police that they had "paid for this trip."
