A resident of Paphos gave 200 thousand euros in "investments" in bonds to scammers
The Cyprus Republic police are investigating another case of online fraud. An elderly resident of Paphos lost 200 thousand euros in "investments" in bonds.
According to the police press office, a 67-year-old man reported to the authorities. The victim said that last July he transferred 200 thousand euros from his bank account to a "foreign bank" for the purpose of purchasing and investing in bank bonds.
However, he later learned that the account to which he sent the money did not belong to a bank but to an unknown individual.
The victim reported that he had previously searched the internet for a specific investment plan for bank bonds. He corresponded by email with a person who claimed to be an employee of a banking institution. The scammer used an email account almost identical to the real email address of the bank.
The suspect provided the trusting citizen with bank account details to which he sent the 200 thousand euros for the purchase of bonds. After realizing he had been defrauded, the man reported the incident to the police.
