Limassol Zoo Set to Transform into Livestock Farm
The proposal to convert Limassol Zoo into a livestock farm has been put forward by the Cyprus Center for Environmental Research and Education of the Holy Metropolis of Limassol (CYKPEE).
The initiative is slated to undergo voting in the Limassol Municipal Council soon, following its recent presentation to the municipal body. Advocates of the proposal envision the zoo being reimagined as "Limassol Livestock Farm Park."
Acknowledging the operational challenges and advocating for a more animal-friendly approach, CYKPEE proposes repurposing the zoo into a small farm or park. Here, friendly animal species would roam in natural settings alongside domestic animals and local fauna.
In this envisioned space, the focus would be on breeding and conserving species without the confinement of cages. Visitors can expect to encounter familiar animals such as goats, pigs, cows, horses, chickens, pigs, and rabbits in their natural habitat.
Moreover, the transformed space aims to serve as an educational hub, enlightening visitors on the significance of animal and environmental conservation. It will also host thematic events involving the zoo's inhabitants.
Proposed activities include animal feeding, drawing contests, guided tours, photo sessions with park residents, volunteer opportunities, donkey rides, egg gathering, and cow milking.
It's important to note that in recent years, Limassol Zoo has faced criticism over animal safety concerns. Protesters rallied for its closure following the tragic death of a deer entangled in a metal fence towards the end of 2022 and into 2023.
