As is known, the northern part of Cyprus is a separate state — the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Car Insurance When Traveling to the TRNC

Despite the ambiguous international status of Northern Cyprus, de facto entry into the country is subject to the internal laws of the TRNC. Specifically, car insurance from the southern part does not work in the north.

Therefore, when entering from the southern part of Cyprus, it is necessary to purchase car insurance. Without this requirement, access to the northern part is not possible.

Border Crossing Points by Car

Here is a list of checkpoints through which you can enter the TRNC. However, not all of them are accessible for cars, and at the Lefka checkpoint, insurance for the northern part is not provided (but you can enter with already existing insurance).

The following checkpoints are available for passage and insurance purchase:

  • Ayios Dometios (Metahan) Checkpoint
  • Derinya — Famagusta Checkpoint
  • Pila — Pergamos Checkpoint
  • Strovilia — Famagusta Checkpoint
  • Astromeritis Checkpoint
  • Pirgos Checkpoint

Insurance Processing

After passing the checkpoint on the southern side of the buffer zone and crossing the “green line,” but before reaching the northern checkpoint, you will see a booth with the sign “Insurance / Sigorta.” This is where you need to show your passport and vehicle documents. You will also pay for the insurance there (prices are listed below).

After receiving the document, you must approach the northern checkpoint of the buffer zone and present it along with your passport.

Cost of Car Insurance When Traveling to the TRNC

The cost of car insurance for a passenger car is 25 euros for 1 month, 60 euros for 3 months, 110 euros for 6 months, and 200 euros for 1 year.

For rental cars and motorcycles, there is also an option to purchase insurance for just three days — 20 and 15 euros, respectively. However, for a month, insurance for a rental car costs 35 euros. All prices are shown in the photo below.

Car rental in Cyprus starts at 10 euros per day (such offers are available on aggregators like Localrent or Discover Cars when renting for a week or more), so even with northern insurance, renting a car in the south will be cheaper.
