As of August 8, updated rules for rational water use have come into effect in Larnaca. The Municipal Self-Government Body (ΕΟΑ) announced that Law 1/1991 will now be enforced without leniency, and fines for violations have significantly increased.

The main goal of the changes is to reduce excessive water consumption during the dry summer and amid declining reserves. The use of hoses to water sidewalks, roads, verandas, fences, and cars is now prohibited. The restrictions apply to all water sources — both from the central supply and natural sources.

The fine for violations has been raised from €51 to €85. It must be paid within 30 days. If payment is late, the amount increases by 50%, with an additional 15 days to settle. Failure to pay may lead to criminal prosecution. For repeat offenses within 18 months, the fine rises to €150.

To monitor compliance, the ΕΟΑ is forming special inspection teams that will check facilities in Larnaca city and district. Inspectors may visit any commercial or public premises upon showing identification, but they will not enter private residences.

Authorities urge residents to use water responsibly to avoid even stricter measures, including potential water supply cuts during peak season.
