Turkish President Erdogan held a telephone conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, during which the parties discussed relations between Ankara and Brussels, regional security and the Cyprus issue.

According to sources in the Turkish president's administration, Erdogan stressed that the growing tension in the Middle East once again demonstrated the strategic importance of cooperation between Turkey and the European Union. According to him, Ankara's participation in European security initiatives would benefit the entire region.

The Turkish leader also stated the need to modernize the Customs Union between Turkey and the EU, which has been in place since 1996. Ankara is seeking to expand the agreement, which currently covers mainly industrial products and processed agricultural goods.

Special attention in the conversation was paid to the situation surrounding Iran and matters of regional stability. Erdogan noted the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and reaffirmed Turkey's commitment to supporting a ceasefire and the diplomatic resolution of conflicts.

During the call, the parties also discussed the Eastern Mediterranean and the Cyprus issue. Ursula von der Leyen later described the conversation with Erdogan as “very good” and stressed that Turkey remains a key EU partner in an unstable region.

According to the head of the European Commission, the European Union is ready to support the Cyprus negotiation process under UN auspices. She also noted the importance of cooperation with Turkey to ensure the stability of supply chains, trade and Europe's energy security.
