The President of Northern Cyprus, Ersin Tatar, called on the country’s parliament to adopt a unanimous resolution in support of the “two states” concept as the basis for resolving the Cyprus conflict. He made this statement at the Turkish House (Türk Evi) after attending a number of meetings within the framework of the UN General Assembly.

According to Tatar, the time has come for parliament to confirm this course without disagreement. He stressed that the policy pursued by the current leadership is “the most correct one” and should become a historic step in the interest of the region’s future and security.

The head of the TRNC recalled that over the past five years the Turkish Cypriot side’s position has shifted: from the idea of a federal system to a strategy based on the recognition of two separate states. In his opinion, this approach strengthens the legitimacy and stability of Northern Cyprus.

Tatar noted that the concept of federation has exhausted itself and no longer corresponds to realities. He accused the Greek Cypriot side of delaying the opening of new crossing points and ignoring cooperation proposals, including assistance in natural disasters.

Special attention was given to the growing armament of the Republic of Cyprus and its agreements with Israel, which, according to him, increase tensions on the island. In addition, he pointed out that the southern Cypriot side is taking steps to restrict the export of Turkish Cypriot products, including halloumi. At the same time, he stressed that the northern side is ready to cooperate in areas such as energy, provided a common basis can be found.

Tatar expressed gratitude to the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, for his consistent support and calls for the recognition of the TRNC in the international arena. He noted that the economy and international relations of Northern Cyprus continue to develop: the republic trades with various countries, hosts students and tourists. According to him, the established institutional structures have become so strong that “they cannot be destroyed with a simple gesture.”

The president emphasized that the Republic of Cyprus has no authority over the northern part of the island, and the Turkish Cypriot side will never give up its sovereignty, statehood, and Turkey’s guarantor role. He added that Northern Cyprus is open to cooperation in all areas that benefit society, but only on an equal basis.
