Kib-Tek: fatal accident in Famagusta occurred during private contractor's work
On March 30, 2026, the Cyprus Turkish Electricity Authority (Kib-Tek) reported a fatal accident occurring between Dörtyol and Geçitkale in Famagusta. As a result of the incident, one person died after coming into contact with a high-voltage line.
According to Kib-Tek, the accident happened during work on a private plot performed by a private contracting company. While operating a crane, contact was made with high-voltage lines passing overhead, resulting in the victim receiving an electric shock and passing away.
The authority denied claims that the incident was related to the ongoing strike, a network malfunction, or the involvement of third-party services. Kib-Tek emphasized that the work carried out was a private initiative and was not performed by the institution's forces; no link was found between the accident and the lack of personnel due to the strike.
Residents of Famagusta and neighboring areas should take Kib-Tek's official position into account when evaluating the causes of the incident and refrain from spreading unverified versions. According to available information, the incident is of a private nature and does not reflect the state of network security for which the institution is responsible.
