Cyprus to update 'consumer basket': large-scale household budget survey kicks off
Starting May 1st, a large-scale household budget survey begins in Northern Cyprus, the results of which will form the basis for recalculating the consumer price index and assessing the cost of living. This was announced by the head of the Statistical Institute, Sevüda Besimler.
According to her, the study's data will directly influence key economic indicators, including inflation, the minimum wage, and poverty levels. "Accurate and complete information from citizens will allow for an objective picture of the cost of living," she emphasized.
The field phase of the study will last a full year—from May 2026 to April 2027—to cover seasonal changes in expenditures. Staff with official IDs and QR codes will visit households across the country. Authorities guarantee full confidentiality: all information will be used exclusively for statistical purposes.
The survey will update the structure of the so-called "consumer basket"—the set of goods and services used to calculate inflation. Furthermore, it will provide insight into current consumption habits and the population's standard of living.
The statistical department stresses that this is one of the most important studies affecting economic policy. Its results will help authorities adjust social measures and make more precise decisions regarding public income and expenditure.
Citizens are encouraged to participate actively in the survey, noting that every response directly impacts the formation of the country's economic picture.
