Letymbiotis: Two Drones Intercepted, No Information on Ballistic Missiles
Cyprus Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis commented on the recent events related to the overnight drone attack on the British Sovereign Base RAF Akrotiri.
According to him, information regarding the alleged launch of two ballistic missiles towards the island remains unconfirmed.
Drone Interception and Airport Evacuation
Letymbiotis reported that around noon, two drones heading towards Cyprus were intercepted in a timely manner.
The evacuation of Paphos Airport was carried out following the detection of two UAVs moving in the direction of the British base in Akrotiri.
Support from Greece
The spokesman confirmed that two frigates are heading from Greece to southern Cyprus, one of which is equipped with an anti-drone system, as well as a pair of F-16 fighter jets.
He thanked Athens for the support, adding that the Cypriot air defense system is in a state of full combat readiness.
It was also announced that the Nicosia FIR airspace was temporarily closed and subsequently reopened.
"Cyprus Was Not the Target"
Letymbiotis emphasized that the target of the attack was not Cyprus as a state:
"Certainly, Cyprus was not the target. The target was the British base at Akrotiri, not the Andreas Papandreou Airbase."
He also noted that Nicosia's dissatisfaction regarding the actions and communication of the British side was expressed to London in the strongest possible terms.
