Nicosia Municipality to raise Palestinian flag and allocate aid to Gaza
The Nicosia Turkish Municipality (LTB) announced its decision to show solidarity with the Palestinian people. The Palestinian flag will be raised on the municipality building, and the 2026 budget will include funds for humanitarian support to Gaza residents.
The official statement emphasized that the initiative aims to draw attention to the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip, where, according to the municipality, around 70,000 people, including women and children, have died over the past two years. It highlighted the dire situation of civilians suffering from blockade, lack of water, food, and medicine.
The municipal council unanimously supported a number of measures:
- — Raising the Palestinian flag on the municipality building;
- — Allocating part of the budget to support the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA);
- — Declaring all public spaces in Nicosia as “Palestine-friendly zones”;
- — Organizing the Gaza Biennale cultural event in the capital;
- — Active participation in the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on November 29;
- — Establishing cooperation with Palestinian municipalities and involving the Union of Turkish Cypriot Municipalities in these initiatives.
The municipality stressed that these steps stem from moral responsibility and the defense of human dignity. At the same time, Nicosia declared its intention not to remain silent in light of the Republic of Cyprus’ close economic and military ties with Israel.
The decision sparked wide reactions in society: supporters see it as an important gesture of solidarity and human rights support, while critics point to possible diplomatic complications and tensions with those who oppose such a stance.
