Restoration work is set to begin soon on two of Northern Cyprus’s most cherished historical landmarks — Kyrenia Castle in Girne and the ancient city of Salamis.

According to Kıbrıs Postası, citing official sources, preparations are underway to restore these culturally significant heritage sites, both of which hold deep historical and symbolic value for the country.

Kyrenia Castle, a historic icon and the pride of Girne, is reportedly at risk of serious deterioration. Parts of its walls are gradually collapsing, raising concerns about its long-term preservation. The urgency of the situation was highlighted by former teacher and current municipal council member Halil Oktunç, who posted images on social media showing fallen stones and bastions on the brink of collapse.

The restoration initiative is part of a joint action plan signed between the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the Republic of Türkiye. The project covers both Kyrenia Castle and the ancient city of Salamis, and teams from both Turkey and Cyprus are expected to begin restoration efforts shortly.
