Protest Against New Minimum Wage to Be Held in Northern Cyprus
Trade unions from the public sector in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), along with private sector workers, will stage a joint protest today against the new minimum wage and the country’s economic policies.
The rally is scheduled for January 24 at 6:00 PM at Dereboyu Pronto Square and will continue in front of the Prime Minister’s office. Organizers expect a large turnout of participants.
The protest is also expected to gain support from many non-governmental organizations, political parties, and employees from both the public and private sectors. Demonstrators will unite for a shared cause—fighting against economic inequality.
As a reminder, on January 17, the Minimum Wage Determination Commission set the first minimum wage for 2025. It has been established at 37,818 Turkish Lira per month (43,469 Turkish Lira before taxes).
The wage was approved by a majority vote, though representatives of the workers opposed the decision.
There is a 10-day period for objections to the new minimum wage in Northern Cyprus, which will end early next week.
The Turkish Cypriot trade union federation (TÜRK-SEN) has already filed an official protest against the set amount.
