Stricter Penalties for Drunk Drivers Planned in Northern Cyprus
Amendments to the criminal code regarding penalties for drivers operating under the influence of alcohol have been introduced in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). The maximum fine will amount to 413,805 TL.
The draft law, prepared to prevent the increase in road traffic accidents, has been published in the Official Gazette.
Additionally, the prison term for accidents resulting in fatalities, which previously carried up to 7 years of imprisonment, has been increased to 10 years.
If the draft law is enacted, individuals driving under the influence may be fined up to 15 times the minimum gross salary. Considering the current minimum wage, which is 27,587 Turkish liras, drunk drivers could be fined up to 413,805 Turkish liras.
"In order to prevent the increase in road traffic accidents, a draft law amending the Criminal Code has been introduced. According to the draft law, drunk drivers may be fined up to 413,805 Turkish liras," the document states.
