Northern Cyprus Sees Coldest Day in 50 Years
Northern Cyprus has experienced its coldest day in half a century. On February 25, 2025, temperatures in Geçitkale dropped to an unprecedented -6.2°C, breaking the previous record.
This is the lowest temperature ever recorded in the country’s history of weather monitoring. Due to the extreme cold, many stations across the TRNC saw new records, not just in Geçitkale.
According to meteorologists, similar record-breaking temperatures were recorded at stations in Vadili, Akdoğan, Nicosia, and several other areas.
Vadili saw its lowest recorded temperature of -3.9°C, while Akdoğan hit -5.7°C. Other new records include -3.8°C in Sandallar, -5.5°C in Kırıkkale, -3.8°C in Çayırova, -5.3°C in Nicosia, -3.4°C in Beyarmudu, -4.1°C in Salamis, and -3.4°C in Çayönü.
As previously reported, several new weather records have been set in the TRNC. September 2024 was the wettest in 15 years, January 2025 was the hottest on record, and February, as expected, became the coldest and windiest month since weather observations began in 1975.
