In Northern Cyprus, pilot “Healthy Canteen” program launched in primary schools
In the new school year, a pilot program called “Healthy Canteen” will begin in primary schools of Northern Cyprus within the framework of the project “Sağlıklı Gıdaya Ulaşabiliyorum” (“Access to Healthy Food”), funded by the European Union. The initiative is implemented by the Cyprus Turkish Dietitians Association (KTDB) and the Association of Universal Children’s Rights; a preparatory workshop was held in June 2025.
According to KTDB, dietitians covered grades 3–4 in 61 schools: Nicosia — 16, Famagusta — 7, Mesaoria — 17, Kyrenia — 7, Morphou and Lefke — 8 each, Iskele and Karpasia — 6; a total of 5,949 students. Schools received healthy eating guides, and tests were conducted before and after classes to assess habits and knowledge.
Preliminary test results show improvement — students started having breakfast more regularly, following three main meals, and choosing healthier options from school canteens. In the new season, voluntary school canteens will gain pilot status, their menus will be aligned with KTDB recommendations, and such canteens will be labeled as “Healthy Canteen” under the “Health in My School” project.
What this means for residents: parents can expect healthier food options in school canteens of participating schools; advice and guides will be available through the schools. Changes will apply only to schools that joined the pilot program.
