Protest in front of the Parliament building in Northern Cyprus against amendments to the Penal Code and Cybercrime Law
On January 26, 2026, a protest took place in front of the Parliament building in Northern Cyprus against bills proposing amendments to the Penal Code and the Cybercrime Law. Participants included representatives of civil organizations, media workers, and TDP leader Zeki Çeler.
Participants stated that the proposed changes could narrow the space for freedom of expression and establish control over the digital public sphere. Statements noted that terms such as "false information" or "distribution inconsistent with reality" are vague and could be interpreted arbitrarily.
According to the organizers, the amendments would affect not only journalists but all citizens expressing opinions on social media, creating a wide zone of surveillance and pressure. During the protest, demands were made to withdraw the bills and conduct extended public consultations.
After the rally, Zeki Çeler stated in writing that the proposed legislation poses serious risks to democratic rights and freedoms and called on the authorities to abandon the initiative. He emphasized that the protection of freedom of expression is a foundation of the rule of law and that a democratic society must be strengthened by tolerance for criticism.
