Rising crime and instability in Northern Cyprus threatens the mental health of the population

On September 10, 2025, the Cyprus Turkish Medical Association (Kıbrıs Türk Tabipleri Birliği, KTTB) issued a statement expressing deep concern about the deterioration of public safety in Northern Cyprus and its impact on the mental well-being of citizens.
The document notes that increasing crime rates, threats against journalists, growing criminal pressure, traffic accidents, workplace incidents, and acts of violence create an atmosphere of instability and distrust in society.
KTTB representatives emphasized that such conditions lead to more frequent cases of depression and anxiety disorders. “Public peace and health are at risk. It should be remembered: without security and peace, there is no health,” the statement reads.
The association also stressed that only in a safe and stable environment can the health of society as a whole be ensured. Special attention is given to children: they should grow up in conditions where they feel protected, in order to become happy, productive, and healthy adults.
In conclusion, the doctors urged authorities to act responsibly and take concrete steps to ensure safety and protect democratic values. “We want to leave our children a Cyprus where security, freedom, and democracy prevail. We dream of a country where journalists can work freely, and people can live without fear — at home, on the streets, and at work, in an atmosphere of peace, calm, and freedom of thought,” summarized KTTB representatives.
