On December 21, the winter solstice occurs in the Northern Hemisphere — the shortest day and the longest night of the year. This date is considered the astronomical beginning of winter.

On this day, the Sun rises to its lowest height above the horizon, so daylight lasts for the minimum time. It is also noted that the solstice date can fall on either December 21 or 22 — because the Earth takes not exactly 365 days, but approximately 365 days and 6 hours, to orbit the Sun.
