Synchronized Police Raids: Hundreds of Drivers Checked, Dozens Detained
Police in Northern Cyprus conducted synchronized preventive and traffic checks on March 24, 2026, from 20:00 to 24:00 in Famagusta, Kyrenia, and Güzelyurt. During the operation, entertainment venues, alcohol outlets, cafes, markets, betting shops, hotels, and crowded areas were monitored.
In Famagusta, inspections revealed no serious violations in establishments, but traffic controllers checked 855 drivers: 216 drivers were reported for various violations, and one vehicle was impounded.
In Kyrenia, inspectors also found no critical violations in the surveyed facilities; however, 37 people were detained as part of the crackdown on illegal residence, and another 5 individuals were arrested for being drunk and disorderly in public places. Traffic checks covered 1,257 drivers; administrative reports were filed against 204 drivers, and 32 vehicles were impounded.
In Güzelyurt, inspections of public places passed without issues; 910 drivers were checked, legal procedures were initiated against 85 people, and 6 vehicles were impounded.
Police report that investigations and control measures are ongoing. It is recommended to carry identification documents, follow traffic rules, and avoid violations that could lead to fines or detention.
