Terrible accident on the Iskele–Ercan highway: one dead, three injured

A serious accident occurred on the road between Iskele and Ercan Airport, resulting in one person dead and three injured.

The traffic accident happened at around 08:15 a.m. in the suburb of Cihangir, near the “Karavezirler” gas station. A car with registration number NH 396, driven by 64-year-old Edmund Jonathan Cook, attempted to overtake a car with registration number EF 127, driven by 57-year-old Hasan Altiparmak. During the maneuver, Cook entered the opposite lane, where he collided with a car with registration number YG 445, driven by 58-year-old Ibrahim Gokgedik.

From the strong impact, Cook’s car was first thrown off the road, then pushed back into Altiparmak’s car, after which it veered off the highway and stopped in a field.

The driver of NH 396, Edmund Jonathan Cook, sustained severe injuries and was taken to Dr. Burhan Nalbantoglu State Hospital in Nicosia. However, despite the doctors’ efforts, he passed away. Among the injured were Cook’s passenger, 71-year-old Anna Steel, as well as two people from the YG 445 car: 36-year-old Serdar Khojiyev and 38-year-old Shekh Ramzhan. They were all hospitalized, and their condition is being clarified.

The police are investigating the circumstances of the accident to determine its causes and whether traffic rules were violated.
