Supermoon to illuminate the sky over Northern Cyprus on October 7

Residents of Cyprus and Northern Cyprus will be able to witness the first supermoon of 2025 on the evening of October 7. According to the Turkish National Observatory TÜBİTAK, the Moon will approach Earth at its closest distance — about 357,000 kilometers — appearing 14% larger and 30% brighter than a regular full moon.
A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the satellite’s perigee — the point in its orbit closest to Earth. As a result, reflected sunlight appears much more intense, and the Moon looks particularly large and radiant.
Astronomers note that the best time to observe the phenomenon will be around 20:00–21:00 Cyprus time, when the Moon rises above the horizon. It is best viewed away from city lights — along the coast, in the mountains, or from open high grounds.
Photographers are advised to use tripods and telephoto lenses to capture lunar surface details and dramatic contrasts, such as over the sea or historic landmarks.
According to NASA, the next supermoon will occur only in November 2025, making this October event a rare chance to see the Earth’s natural satellite at its brightest.
Astronomers remind that a supermoon is a natural phenomenon caused by the Moon’s elliptical orbit and has no physical effect on weather or natural processes, though it always inspires awe among observers.
