Three-Way Meeting on Cyprus Issue May Be Scheduled for October

A three-way meeting on the Cyprus issue could potentially take place in October, following the UN summit in New York. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) authorities are pushing for a 4+1 negotiation format.

According to Greek media citing diplomatic sources, the exact date for the three-way meeting, which would involve the UN Secretary-General and the leaders of both communities on the island, will be determined after separate meetings between António Guterres, President Nikos Christodoulides, and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar on the sidelines of the UN summit in New York.

The 79th session of the UN General Assembly begins in New York on September 10. The annual debates will take place from September 24 to 28, and again on September 30.

It is anticipated that the President of the Republic of Cyprus will deliver a speech at the General Assembly on the morning of September 25.

Meanwhile, TRNC Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu confirmed that a Northern Cyprus delegation will attend the UN summit in New York at the end of the month.

However, he stressed that a three-way meeting during the summit "is not on the agenda."

"I can firmly deny claims that the Greek Cypriot side has accepted plans for a three-way meeting. At best, a 4+1 format meeting is possible," the minister stated.

This format would include representatives from the governments of Greece and Turkey, in addition to the leaders of the two communities and the UN Secretary-General.
