A man attempting to defraud a currency exchange six days after his release has been detained in Famagusta
In Famagusta, Northern Cyprus, on December 26, 37-year-old E.K. tried to deceive a currency exchange by pretending to be a police officer and asking for a loan. After a complaint was filed, the suspect was detained and sent to prison for further proceedings.
Police officer Mustafa Zeki Arkynel presented the circumstances of the case in court. According to him, E.K. came to the exchange on December 26, identified himself as a police officer, and claimed he needed a loan. After the victims reported the incident, the offender was promptly identified.
It is noted that the accused has similar prior convictions, and his most recent release from the Central Prison was on December 20, meaning the crime was committed six days after his release. At the police's request, the court ordered that E.K. be placed in the Central Prison for a period not exceeding three months until the preliminary investigation and further court proceedings are completed.
For residents of Northern Cyprus, this means increased caution when dealing with strangers claiming to be law enforcement officers; in case of suspicious requests for money, it is recommended to notify the police immediately.
