Major apartment burglary under investigation in Gönyeli
A major apartment burglary that took place during the daytime on January 14, 2026, is being investigated in Gönyeli.
According to police officer Nurettin Özgenler, speaking in court, an unknown person entered a house located on Marmaras Street between 08:50 and 15:30. The suspect took advantage of an open aluminum bedroom window and removed a steel safe containing cash and gold jewelry.
According to police data, the following items were stolen from the house:
- 25,040 US dollars,
- 18,300 British pounds,
- 350 euros,
- 20,000 Turkish lira,
- as well as numerous gold items — rings, chains, earrings, and pendants.
After the homeowner filed a report, police launched an investigation. Fingerprints were found at the scene and forensic analysis determined that they belong to the suspect A.H., who was arrested on January 16.
During a search of the suspect’s residence in Nicosia, police seized 18,000 Turkish lira and 500 US dollars. CCTV analysis also indicated that the detainee may have had an accomplice, who is currently being sought.
The court granted the police request to extend the suspect’s detention for an additional three days. The investigation is ongoing, and additional video materials are being reviewed.
