Man Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison for Rape of 19-Year-Old Girl in Kyrenia

In Kyrenia, a verdict has been reached in a serious crime case that occurred in September 2023. Mehmet Güler has been sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment.
The decision was made by the Girne Ağır Ceza Mahkemesi (Kyrenia Assize Court), which unanimously found the defendant guilty on several counts: rape, unlawful detention, violation of privacy, theft, sexual assault, and harassment.
According to court materials, the 19-year-old girl was in a state of heavy alcohol intoxication. After visiting a hospital, she got into the defendant's car, intending to go home.
City CCTV cameras recorded that the victim was in the car without conscious reaction. According to the investigation, the man took her to the seaside, where he committed sexual assault and recorded the incident on a mobile phone.
Afterward, he left the girl in a semi-dressed state and fled the scene.
The incident came to light a month later when the defendant began threatening the girl with the distribution of the videos. Following a complaint, an investigation was launched, resulting in the man's arrest.
During the trial, the defendant was unable to provide a convincing defense.
The court noted that the defendant took advantage of the victim's helpless state, whereas he had a duty to ensure her safety.
