As part of an operation against document forgery, police in Girne detained two people suspected of a large-scale scheme to produce and distribute fake driver’s licenses. The detainees were brought before court and placed in custody for three days for further investigation.

According to police, the suspects acted together during the period from October 2025 to April 2026. They are alleged to have produced and handed over about 20 fake driver’s licenses to Bangladeshi citizens living in the TRNC who had no legal right to drive.

The investigation found that the fake documents were made in the names of people outside the country, after which they were illegally brought into the TRNC through various channels, including parcels and intermediaries whose identities have not yet been established.

The documents were then, according to the investigation, sent through a driving school in Girne to the tax office for their «legalization» and subsequent issuance of official TRNC driver’s licenses. Police say the suspects thus put fake documents into circulation despite being aware of their illegal origin.

For their services, preliminary data show, they received about 48,000 Turkish lira and 695 US dollars from Bangladeshi citizens.

The investigation began after information was received on 25 May 2026. Arrest warrants were issued that same day, and the suspects were detained. During a search of one of their homes, Kuwaiti driver’s licenses issued in another person’s name were also found, which became additional physical evidence.

Police continue the investigation, identifying possible accomplices and the origin of the fake documents.
