Wastewater Treatment Problems in Kyrenia Due to Holiday Crowds
Kyrenia’s wastewater treatment facilities struggled to cope with the surge in visitors during the May 19 Atatürk Memorial Day celebrations, resulting in some wastewater leaking into the sea. Authorities are already taking steps to fix the issue.
Mayor Murat Şenkul announced the incident on his social media page, noting that despite the holiday, municipal crews responded immediately to deal with the situation.
He stressed that the city aims to resolve all capacity issues at the treatment plant before the end of the administration’s term.
"Since yesterday, our wastewater treatment plant in Kyrenia has been experiencing performance issues due to the sharp increase in population related to the May 19 holiday," Şenkul wrote. "Our sewer teams are already working to improve capacity. Our goal is to complete the necessary upgrades as quickly as possible and prevent any further leaks, even minor ones, into the sea. We’re grateful to our Sewerage Department staff, who volunteered to work on a public holiday."
