A farmer in New Zealand has created Tinder for cows
In New Zealand, a farmer from the Waikato region has unexpectedly become the author of a kind of "swipe dating app" for cattle. And although at first glance it might seem like a joke, the idea turned out to be quite serious and even useful in the field of livestock farming.
A farmer named Jacob Freeman was working on developing an AI-based system that would help efficiently select mating pairs for cows. The main goal is to improve herd quality: health, milk yield, disease resistance, and other important characteristics. To achieve this, he used large sets of genetic data, as well as information about the physical condition of the animals, reproductive history, and even breed.
Over time, this system evolved into an intuitive app that essentially resembles Tinder. A user — for example, another farmer or an agricultural worker — can browse profiles of bulls and cows: photos, age, pedigree, reproductive indicators. If the animal is suitable — swipe right, if not — swipe left. This way, farmers get a convenient tool for selecting ideal mating pairs, significantly simplifying and speeding up the process.
Interestingly, Jacob himself did not expect such a buzz around his idea. He admits that it all started with a simple attempt to optimize work on his own farm. But when his colleagues and neighbors started discussing the project, it became clear — the technology had potential for wider use. Shortly afterward, he launched a startup called "Tudder", which other farms across the country have already begun testing.
The project has received positive feedback in the agricultural community, as it combines modern technologies with the practical needs of livestock breeders. In an era where agriculture increasingly relies on data and digital tools, such developments are becoming ever more relevant.
