Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) organized a series of scientific events for schoolchildren as part of the international REAL BRAIN project, dedicated to Brain Awareness Week. The initiative brought students together with the world of science through virtual reality technologies and interactive programs.

The REAL BRAIN project, coordinated by Associate Professor and neurologist Amber Eker Bakkaloglu, received international recognition and was among the initiatives supported by the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS) and the Dana Foundation. This year, awards went to 99 projects from 44 countries around the world.

As part of the program, university representatives visited Eastern Mediterranean Nature College, Bülent Ecevit Anatolian High School and Namık Kemal High School. The events were held under the slogan “Come and touch the brain.”

Schoolchildren — from primary school pupils to high school students — were able to “travel” inside the human brain using VR headsets, study its regions and complete interactive tasks. The organizers note that this format makes science more accessible and engaging for young people.

University faculty members and medical school students also took part in the project. According to the organizers, the main goal of the initiative is to increase young people’s interest in science and research in the field of neuroscience.

At the end of the events, commemorative awards were presented to the school principals who supported the project for their contribution to promoting science among young people.
