54 Traffic Accidents in Northern Cyprus in One Week: 1 Dead, 24 Injured
Between March 16 and March 22, 2026, 54 traffic accidents were recorded in Northern Cyprus, one of which resulted in a fatality and 24 injuries, according to the TRNC General Directorate of Police.
According to the department, 35 accidents resulted only in property damage, 18 involved bodily injuries, and one was fatal. The main causes identified were speeding (19 cases), careless driving (12), failure to stop at intersections (9), insufficient following distance (8), and other factors (6). The total amount of damage caused was 2,589,123 Turkish Liras.
Distribution of accidents by district: Nicosia — 20 cases, Famagusta — 15, Kyrenia and Güzelyurt — 8 each, Iskele — 3. During the reporting period, 12,649 drivers were checked during raids; 1,707 drivers were prosecuted.
Violations recorded included 881 for speeding, 41 for speeding detected by mobile control, 18 for dangerous driving, 22 for careless driving, 91 for driving without registration, 35 for driving under the influence of alcohol, and 10 for mobile phone use while driving. During the inspections, 148 vehicles were banned from traffic and 7 drivers were arrested.
