Unemployment in Cyprus rises: April showed alarming dynamics
In April 2026, the unemployment rate in Cyprus once again demonstrated growth, according to the Statistical Service. The number of registered unemployed at the end of the month was 8,962 people, and taking into account seasonal adjustment, the figure reached 10,585, increasing compared to March (10,316). This indicates the formation of a steady upward trend in the labor market.
In annual terms, the situation has also worsened: compared to April 2025, the number of unemployed rose by 844 people, or 10.4%. The main contribution to the rise in unemployment came from industries such as hotels and restaurants, administrative and support services, transport, as well as professional, scientific, and technical activities. These sectors are traditionally sensitive to external economic fluctuations and seasonal changes.
Experts note that the current dynamics may be related to general economic uncertainty and changes in the tourism sector, which plays a key role in the island's economy. External factors, including geopolitical instability and a decrease in business activity in certain areas, exert additional pressure on the labor market.
