The state approved a museum project in the Saint George area of Peyia
Government services have given positive assessments to the proposal by the founder and CEO of the Korantina Homes group, Giorgos Ioannou, to fully finance the construction of an Archaeological Museum in the Saint George area of Peyia, Cyprus.
According to Philenews, over the past two months the proposal was reviewed by all relevant authorities, and all preliminary expert opinions were positive. The donor company has prepared design sketches, and the first meeting with the Deputy Minister of Culture has already taken place to officially inform about the intention to donate funds.
The Mayor of Akamas, Marinos Lambru, confirmed the information and expects formal approval from the government services, after which project implementation will begin. The museum will be built in a neighboring area under the jurisdiction of the Antiquities Department.
The initiative was announced by Giorgos Ioannou in March at a conference at the Cap St Georges tourist complex; the estimated project cost exceeds €1.5 million. The museum is considered necessary to house and display archaeological finds from Cape Drepanon, which are regularly discovered during excavations.
Greek professor and excavation director Professor Bakirtzis noted that the area has been inhabited since early Christian times and particularly developed during the reign of Emperor Justinian (6th century AD), and the baptistery found there was used by worshippers from across the Mediterranean. According to the mayor, the project will help better present the archaeological heritage of Peyia and its surroundings to millions of visitors.
