Cyprus to tighten rules on environmental advertising
By September 27, 2026, companies operating in Cyprus will have to comply with new rules regarding the use of environmental claims in advertising and on product packaging.
The changes are stipulated by the Consumer Protection (Amending) Law, which transposes the EU EmpCo directive (2024/825) into national legislation. The document is aimed at combating so-called "greenwashing" — when brands use environmental claims without actual verification.
Under the new rules, general terms such as "eco-friendly," "green," "climate friendly," "organic," and "plant-based" may be prohibited unless supported by specific evidence.
Misleading statements about product characteristics — for example, regarding recycled plastic or environmental certificates — may also be banned if the information is inaccurate or incomplete.
The law is intended to help consumers make more informed and environmentally responsible decisions, while also protecting them from deceptive advertising.
